Craft CMS Developer

About the role

About webdna

webdna is an award-winning digital development, design and marketing agency with deep expertise in creating websites and web apps. We are one of the leading Craft CMS agencies in the world. We are one of only 14 agencies in the world that are both Craft and Craft Commerce Verified and the only agency in the UK with both accreditations. We were recently named European Craft CMS Agency of the Year, UK Craft CMS Agency of the Year and one of the top 20 agencies to work for in the UK in the prestigious Campaign Best Places to Work 2023 awards.

The job

We are looking for a Craft Developer to join our experienced team of fifteen experts in development, design, digital marketing and project and account management. We are looking for someone with the passion and dedication to become one of the best Craft CMS developers in the world. We will help you to progress your skills in backend development using Craft CMS and PHP, and frontend development using HTML, CSS, Javascript and Twig.

You will be joining a team of four developers led by our Technical Director, Sam Birch. You will work alongside Sam, one Senior Developer (Charlie), one Developer (Mike) one Junior Developer (Georgia), our Senior Project Manager (Helen) and our design and marketing teams. To start with, you will work in partnership with one of the other developers on the team until you are familiar with our internal processes, the standards that we expect and the way we communicate. As you have familiarised yourself with how we work, you will be given the autonomy to lead your own projects with support available from the rest of the team if needed.

We view the Developer role as having three levels, with the lowest level being a small step above a very strong Junior Developer and the highest level just a small step below the lowest level of a Senior Developer. This role is pitched right in the middle of those three levels, so for the right person there will be an opportunity to increase their salary as they move through the different levels, then move up to Senior Developer.

Requirements

We are looking for the right type of person with a great attitude to learning and developing their own skills. Someone who does not walk past a problem; they identify what it is and solve it or help someone else to find the right solution.

You should already have a deep understanding of Craft CMS, you will have built multiple Craft websites and, ideally also, some Craft plugins. You should have strong PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript skills, the ability to write clean and effective Twig code and know when it is best to separate functionality into modules and plugins within the Craft ecosystem.

You should have experience in working closely with designers to build interfaces from designs that match the designer’s vision but be willing to provide feedback where you think there are opportunities for improvement. You will be expected to QA your own work before it moves within the team for testing and then to our client for user acceptance testing.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about digital experiences, have a strong work ethic, and the sort of eye for detail that will enable them to spot an out-of-place ;’ or front-end design that is not pixel-perfect.

You should also have a working knowledge of technical SEO, and will work closely with our SEO and marketing team to ensure that you grow your skills and expertise. You will also implement Google Analytics and other tracking tools and test these with the marketing team.

Qualifications and Experience

The most important thing that we are looking for is the right person with the right attitude, but the following qualifications and experience are a good guide for the level of individual we are looking for:

  • BSc in computer science, graphic design or communication or comparable experience
  • Three to five years of experience working translating visual designs into functioning Craft CMS websites
  • You should be enthusiastic about advancing your skills, to really fit in, you will be curious about new web technologies and keen to try it out
  • You should have the ability to give and take direction, communicate your ideas clearly and interact with your colleagues and our clients in an empathetic and thoughtful manner
  • webdna is a busy agency so you should be able to multi-task, jump between projects seamlessly and handle shifting priorities elegantly. Don’t be surprised if the plan changes, sometimes that is just how it goes

What we offer

This is a chance to fast-track your career as a Craft CMS developer by working alongside some of the very best in the world. As you would expect from one of the top agencies to work for the UK, the wrap-around package is pretty good, too! We offer a competitive salary, north of average for the role and experience, flexible working hours and location, 28 days holiday a year, 2 charity days a year for you to work on any charity projects that you are passionate about, a pension, healthcare, dental and optical, and generous policies covering everything from sabbaticals to parental leave. We also operate a hybrid working environment. You may work in the office, at home, in a coffee shop, or anywhere you like; the choice is yours. You decide where you work best, and we will support you to enable you to make it work. You will have a training budget assigned to you, and we would expect you to join the team at Dot All each year.

We have monthly staff events with remote workers heading to Nottingham for some time with the rest of the team, fun activities and a night out. We also provide you with all of the equipment you will need for your office and home set-up. Drinks, snacks and fruit are also available in the office whenever you want them.

How to be selected

We are looking for a smart person who will fit into the team. They will be a strong Craft CMS developer who can demonstrate their aptitude to become a great developer. We would like you to send a cover letter which explains why you think you would be right for the role and your CV to jobs@webdna.co.uk.

There is a bit of a heads-up about what it takes to be part of the team in this blog, if you want to get our attention, then demonstrate how you would fit in!

Once we have your cover letter and CV our process to select the right candidate(s) will be:

  • Review all cover letters and CVs, and provide feedback to every candidate, successful or not
  • Invite the most suitable candidates to an initial interview where they will meet some of the development team, learn about webdna and the role, and get a chance to explain why they think they would fit in
  • We will shortlist suitable candidates and provide them with a task to complete in their own time
  • Set up a DISC profile session to help us understand what drives you and how we can get the best out of you. Your DISC profile will be yours to keep and use to learn more about yourself and how your colleagues and managers can get the best out of you.
  • Second meeting with different members of the webdna team to review your task, discuss your DISC profile and help us and you understand if there is synergy between us all.

It is not easy to get through this process, but at the end of it is a job that you will love, with people who will share your passion and who will be able to get the best out of you. It is worth the effort.

Strictly no recruiters or agencies.
