Dot One 2024 - Our roundup of this morning's talks
It’s been a great start to Pixel and Tonic’s Dot One UK event. This year hosted in London at One Hundred Shoreditch, the one-day event sees Craft CMS specialists from throughout the UK and beyond, gather to discuss all things Craft CMS and Craft Commerce.
A successful year for Craft CMS
It’s already been an eventful year for the CMS provider who launched version five of the content management system at the beginning of the year. This has brought with it a host of great new upgrades including improvements to both the developer and author experience. We’ve been working with the system for a while now, and with so many significant improvements to the system for both the dev and the content teams, we were curious to see what Pixel and Tonic could possibly have in store for us next.
Travis Gertz kicked off proceedings welcoming us all to the venue and giving us an overview of what we could expect for the day. He was quickly followed by CEO Brandon Kelly who presented State of Craft 2024. And first up was some great news for fans of Craft CMS, the system is now ranked 7th most used worldwide.
Brandon also explained that, very much like our own, the team itself has grown significantly over the past few years. There are now sixteen staff and revenue remains on a good trajectory. As a Craft CMS specialist, we welcome this news. Not only is Craft an exceptional CMS to work with, but we also love the peace of mind that comes with this financial health and stability. It means that they can continue to provide and invest in an excellent quality product and service.
Craft 5 was of course discussed and it seems that the rest of the Craft CMS community loves it just as much as we do. The change in user experience and content architecture has gone down well with agencies and end clients alike. Features such as the ability to move entries between sections, the revamped page preview and the ability to create entries in rich text have provided a lot more flexibility and improved author experience. Which of course has resulted in better content for sites. And introducing two-factor authentication, or 2FA, gives users added assurance when it comes to security.
And then the presentation moved to what to expect in the future. While we don’t want to give too much away, Pixel and Tonic are a team who are always looking for ways to drive the system forward and so naturally there was some talk of what Craft 6 might look like. At a top level, the team is looking to further advance the ability to create detailed and dynamic content architecture.
Alex Morrison then presented Craft Goes to Museum. This was a fascinating talk which looked specifically at how the Craft Content Management system can support organisations in the cultural and heritage sector. Alex explained that one of his organisation's principles was to be “better for the people who use our work” and he went on to discuss how Craft CMS helps them to achieve this.
Ultimately, museum sites must cater for a large amount of people and must facilitate huge amounts of media and searchable catalogue content. The British Museum, for example, owns 8 million objects and only shows 1% of this. Therefore, an online portal offers a much-needed and important solution to deliver content - and Craft is a platform that can do this.
It’s great to hear that, after a significant amount of research Alex and the team came to the same conclusion as us - Craft CMS really is one of the best to work with!
